INFORMATION & SYMPTOMS OF THE ILLNESS

FISH LICE (A.K.A. ARGULUS)

Fish lice are visible to the naked eye. Notice its green disk-like shape, often with 2 visible eyes and can move around the fish or from host to host. Its hooks can go into the fish’s skin and gills (appear as tiny red dots) and creates extreme irritation causing the fishes to scratch and rub against objects and at a later stage they will become lethargic. Affected fish are subjected to severe stress and due to the open wound the fish is susceptible to secondary infections like bacterial gill disease and ulcers, or secondary parasite attacks like Ich and Costia. This type of combined attack can result in high numbers of fatalities.

ANCHOR WORM (A.K.A. LERNEA ELEGANS)

Anchor worms are visible to the naked eye. Anchor worms are not caused by stress of the fish but it is highly contagious. They can be brought in on a newly arriving fish, that hasn’t been quarantined, or even as an egg on plant. Unlike fish lice, anchor worm does not move around on the body of the fish once it is attached. Flashing and scratching when the anchor worm is still in the larvae stage, since the larvae will attach to the fishes body with the same menace then the adult.

LEECH (A.K.A. PISCICOLA GEOMETRA)

The leeches are visible to the naked eye. It is pale brown in color about 1 mm in width and can measure up to 25 mm long. When fishes are attacked by leech, they are extreme lethargy, and you will see paling and darkening of color. The leech bites into the fish and feeds off the fluid and tissue of the fish, causing immense damage, finally leading to death of the fish. Leech does not need to live on the fish, it merely attaches to the fish to feed and then, once gorged, it leaves the fish and returns only to feed.
